Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter

What an interesting text we are reading! Initially, we started by making a personal connection by identifying people in similar a situation to Hester Prynne. Today, I want you to display your understanding of the text and make a deeper connection by completing the following: 1) analyze Hester Prynne's character using three adjectives and three quotes. 2) Create three level 2 and 3 questions (a total of 6 ) 3) Write a personal response to the text-What are your thoughts? Which character do you like/hate? How do you think Hester would be treated today? This is just an initial response to the text based on your understanding.
YOUR RESPONSE WILL BE ON MY PAGE AS A COMMENT. I WILL RESPOND TO YOUR POST!

  1. My thoughts about the text is that it states everything you need to know about the character. The character i like the most was Hester Prynne because she was compassionate person in her life.Hester Prynne would probably be treated with more respect in today's world since the world is changing every year.

  2. Hester Prynne is a character that is filed with agony and shame, but strong as well. My thoughts about the text is that the story is very discriptive, with much detail to visualize, and this makes the story less dramatic. The character that I like in the text is Hester, because I admire that she does not give up even though that she has to put up with her "daily shame". I think that is Hester was alive today she would be treated with sorrow but with respect, once we find out what she've been through.

    Level 2Questions:
-Why does Hester begin to have doubt in her society?
-Why would the children get the idea of witchcraft and where?
-What does the needle do to Hester?

    Level 3 Questions:
    -Is Eutopia realy Eutopia?

  3. Repenting for your sins is always a good start to making a change. Minister Dimsdale confessed his sins, though his results weren't as I expected. My view on the text is that each page is far too descriptive and it sways away from the original topic. Though, each page contains new terms that help expand my vocabulary. I like Hester Prynne for many reasons. Her proud characteristic is the main reason I like her, she isn't ashamed or embarrassed of what she did and everyday she goes through criticism and still manages to persevere. I hate Minister Dimsdale and Pearl. Dimsdale basically mocked the position of a minister, committing numerous sins and still having the audacity to come to the pulpit and preach falsely. Pearl already shows signs of wickedness and that is unacceptable coming from a child. If Hester was alive today, she would be treated very differently. In this current society, crimes such as the ones Hester committed aren't new or unusual, many people commit adultery and walk away with a slap on the wrist. Hester would fit perfectly in the current world.

  4. Hester Prynne a woman accused of adultery, with a baby to prove the accuastion. A woman who is strong because she stood up against the gossipers daily, agony, and sin. I respect Hester, yes she commited a forbidden sin but need i remind you that no one is perfect on planet earth. My respect has increased for her , because the Puritan women that gossiped bout her thought that they was top of the line picture perfect. When in reality they were just as much as a sinner as Hester. I wouldnt say i hate the women that gossiped about her but i do dislike them. The reason i dont hate them is because its natural for them to gossip because thats what people do in this world. In the world today Hester wouldnt be treated like she was in the story, she would be slacked off of, nobody would really pay attention, she wouldnt be brought to trial because she cheated.

    Level 2 Questions:
    1. Why is Hester Prynnes baby called a sin borned infant?
    2. What was the motive for Hester wearing the scarlet letter?
    3. Why does Hester walk with her head high as she passes the people of the town?

    Level 3 Questions:
    1. If the town was considered Eutopia, why is it that they had prisons?
    2. If Hester had a chance to go back and change things, do you think she would have done so?
    3. How will Hesters baby be affected by her commiting adultery?

  5. Hester Prynne, a fulfilled character with many conflicts faced finds ways to still see happiness. Even though she committed a adultery and now has a baby to take care of named Pearl, she still claim's to be Hester. She had the self-courage to stand up to the town. In reality, everybody is not perfect which also goes for the Puritan community. The gossipers felt like they was pure and clean that they never have and never will commit a sin.

  6. As a result, I respect Hester because she reminds me of my mother. My mother learned a lot from her mistakes and what she faced in the pase

  7. Hawthorne depicts a lot of details and one cam visualize what is going on.Pearl is my favorite character because she is a symbol.Pearl symbolizes an "evil" miracle for she was born of sin so it is ironic that she is a gift from God in those times. Now a days Hester would be considered as any human being because a lot of women are in her situation and many strive to overcome it turning shame into respect. So Hester would be considered your average strong willed woman, or otherwise human.
